Tom Gotsill’s latest play, Colonel of Reason, was recently awarded the 2018 Jeremiah Kaplan Prize for New Plays (Cape Cod). It was performed in staged readings at Eventide Theatre Company in March, 2018.

Colonel of Reason is a full-length historical drama based on the life of Gilded Age orator and thinker Robert Green Ingersoll, known as “The Great Agnostic”. The action follows Ingersoll as he courageously confronts the threat of assassination while, in the spirit of Thomas Paine, he defends reason, science, humanism and secular government against the tenacious forces of superstition, faith, and theism. Woven throughout the play are the profound and humorous monologues for which Ingersoll was world-famous.
